This incredibly delicious and fragrant drink was widespread in Russia and was used to treat colds and thirst, and I propose to recall today, this old recipe.

Description of preparation:

For the first time the recipe of sbiten Suzdal is mentioned in the Chronicles of 1128, where it is said that this drink made from honey with the addition of various spices. Of course, the technology of production of drink at the time was a little different, and often it was used by the samovar or other special attachments. But I want to reassure all those who decided to make Suzdal the drink at home, because now you can do it very simply, on a conventional oven, using the pan. The taste of the drink from this, not the least bit suffering, the drink turns out very fragrant and spicy, it’ll warm you on cold winter evenings, a chilled can quench the thirst in the summer heat. 1) Pour water into a saucepan and put it over a fire. As soon as the water heats up, put in the honey and stir everything. 2) Cook this mixture on slow fire for 20 minutes after boiling. 3) In a separate bowl, mix all the spices, you can use them as ground and dried. After 20 minutes spread the spices to the pan and cook sbiten further 5 minutes. 4) Then remove from heat the pan and strain the drink through a folded several times a gauze. If you want the drink was a dark color, it can be colored with burnt sugar. Winter sbiten drink, of course, hot, but in the summer, as I was saying, the drink is served cold.


  • Water — 1 Liter
  • Honey — 75 G
  • Cinnamon — 0.4 Grams
  • Ginger — 10 GMS
  • Cardamom — 0.5 Grams
  • Bay leaf — 1-2 Pieces
  • Cloves — 4-6 Pieces
